K-Drama ‘The Good Bad Mother’s’ Plot

“Youngsun”, Who had no choice but to become an unrelentingly bad mother for the sake of her child, and “Kangho,”who had turned into a child, embark on a heartwarming healing comedy to find the happiness they have lost.

When Kangho was inside Youngsun’s womb, Kangho’s father is killed by Oh Taesoo and Song Woobyeok. Afterward, Youngsun harshly educates Kangho in order to make him a prosecutor. During Kangho’z Journey to become a prosecutor, Miju’s assistance plays a significant role.

On the day of his swearing-in ceremony, Kangho bids farewell to Miju. He realizes that his pursuit of revenge could endanger Miju and his mother Youngsun, so he attempts to sort out his relationships.

(After parting ways with Kangho, Miju gives birth to twin children. She secretly leaves the kids with their grandmother and flees. Living relentlessly, she eventually encounters her older sister, whom she had collaborated with in the past. Betrayed by Partner Miju ends up returning to Choouri)

Furthermore, Kangho asks Song Woobyeok to adopt him as his son. To obtain the stamp for the adoption agreement, he goes down to his fiancee and Choouri to get the stamp from Youngsun. On the way back up to Seoul, feeling unwell, Kangho lets his fiancee drive. During a brief stop, her scarf flies away, and as they return to the car, a large truck crashes into it and flees.

Due to the accident, Kangho becomes a vegetative state, but with Youngsun’s unwavering dedication, he eventually regains consciousness. Moving back home and under Youngsun’s care, he begins to regain movement in his hands, feet, and eventually the ability to stand. (His intelligence also regresses to the level of a 5-yer-old.)

Throughout this process, there are many sad moments, and upon learning that Youngsun is in the terminal stage of stomach cancer, she trains him relentlessly, intending to make sure he can stand on his own before she passes away.

K-Drama ‘The Good Bad Mother’s’ End

While living with Kangho, Youngsun discovers Kangho’s dangerous revenge plans. In response, she destroys all the materials Kangho had collected and trains him to be able to continue running the pig farm.

On the other hand, fearing that Kangho might regain his senses and stand up, Oh Taesoo sets fire to the pig farm once again in an attempt to eliminate Kangho. However, during this process, Kangho collapses, and in the process of falling, he regains his consciousness.

With his senses restored, Kangho realizes his revenge and, on the day of Youngsun’s birthday party, he carries it out. Unfortunately, on the same day, Youngsun passes away and goes to heaven.

Personal appreciation about K-Drama ‘Good Bad Mother’

The beginning of ‘The Good Bad Mother’ may appear to be driven by a revenge plot, but in reality, aside from episodes 1,2, and 13,14, the story is depicted through the moments shared between Kangho and Youngsun, along with occasional scenes featuring Miju and moments involving the characters of Choouri.

The drama doesn’t carry a heavy subject, and the focus is primarily on the moments between Kangho and Younsun, so there isn’t a gripping tension that makes you sweat. It’s a comfortable and enjoyable show, one that you can watch with ease and even shed tears together.

Watching the drama, I found myself thinking about my mother once again, and various thoughts crossed my mind, hehe. The overall atmosphere set in the first episode gave a clear sense of what kind of tone the drama would have, so the comedic elements didn’t feel forced.

Actress Miran Ra truly delivers an exceptional performance.

The antagonists are portrayed as real villains, and each time they appeared, it felt like the drama took a different turn, only to quickly return to its core.

It evoked the nostalgic feeling of old Korean dramas, presenting warmth intertwined with the essence of Korean tradition. It had a mix of heartwarming and comedic elements, and in the final episode, it tied up all the loose ends and plot threads introduced throughout the series.

K-Drama ‘The Good Bad Mother’s’ Notable Characters

It was a well-crafted drama that effectively utilized even the minor details. For instance, the fortune-telling uncle’s ‘Caps(Security Service in Korea)’ and the yakuza daughter, haha. It was satisfying to see what happened to the characters after those moments.

Furthermore, Yoo In-Soo, who played the role of Samshik, was an actor who had previously portrayed a ruthless villain named Gwinam in ‘All of Us Are Dead/Netflix’ so it was interesting to see him in a different role. I felt like I had seen him somewhere before, Turns out, he’s really skilled at acting. My husband recognized him right away and mentioned it, otherwise, I might not have noticed.

The supporting actors, like Andrea(the cheerful farm worker) and the actress who played Ahong, did a great job in their roles. I had hoped for a good ending for Trot Back, and it turned out well, which was pleasing.

There were many memorable lines, and the child actors who portrayed Yaejin and Seojin were incredibly cute. It’s amazing how well they acted, and they were just adorable(seems like they’ve grown up, haha). Their dialect was charming, and the cameos were enjoyable. The scenes that paid homage to other works added to the fun.

If you’re looking for a drama that allows you to watch with a light heart while also wanting to shed a tear, I recommend “The Good Bad Mother”

It captures the unique atmosphere of Korean dramas and offers a heartwarming and cozy vibe. The intertwining stories of Kangho and Younsun, Kangho and Miju, the people of Choouri and Youngsun, Samshik’s parents, Miju and her mother, Samshik’s tearful unrequited love, the deputy director and assistant manager’s return to farming life, the folks of Choouri, the adorable dialect and speech of Yaejin and Seojin, the downfall of Oh Taesoo and Song Woobyeok, and the “flower pig”

The supporting actors all delicer great performances, and the direction is lively and solid.

I remember the line from Youngsun in the last episode, where she said, “Treat each other as if it’s always the last love.” It’s a precious sentiment, emphasizing valuing one another like It’s your last love rather than just a first love. Living with such an outlook could bring happiness and allow us to lead our lives while considering our loved ones.

Youngsun’s life was indeed full of blessings, but I wonder at what moments she truly felt the importance of valuing her husband, children, herself, and the people around her, as she often expressed in her lines.

Although it’s drama, I truly wish that Kangho and Youngsun, once again as mother and son, could have lived happily.
