Introducing “Ssombody”

A Netflix series that unfolds through the social connceting app ‘Ssombody’, where a murder occurs, intertwining the developer ‘Seom’ and her friends with the enigmatic figure Yuno. The story revolves around their involvement with Yuno as suspicious incidents unfold.

Review of the K-Drama ‘Ssombody’ Characters

Seong Yuno(Actor: Kim Young-kwang) – A psychopathic serial killer

Kim Seom(Actor: Kang Hae lim) – The protagonist who developed the social connecting app

Mok Won(Actor: Kim yong-ji) – A shaman and friedn of Ki-eun

Ki-eun(Kim Soo-yeon) – Seom’s friend

The age rating of the drama “Ssombody”

Among the Koran dramas available on Netflix, it’s probably one of the most intense in terms of its level of intimacy.

Excluding its brutality, it might rank first in terms of sensuality. Various characters appear, and since the premise involves dates through an anonymous app, scenes related to relationships, including one-night stands, are portrayed without filters.

To see this depicted in a Korean drama was quite surprsing.

It’s terms of violence, scenes of murder or the final scenes might be intense, so if you dislike blood and gore, I suggest skipping those parts.

Out of all the dramas and movies I’ve seen, it’s definitely number one in terms of explicit content.

After watching the trailer, I decided to give “Ssombody” a try(thinking it would be entertaining), but it turned out to be a drama that felt like a waste of time. It’s been a while since I’ve felt this frustrated by a show.

I sometimes consider dropping it midway, but somehow I managed to watch it until the end.

Perhaps the director’s skill is what made me continue despite the frustration. The fact that it continues to come to mind might be due to the lingering feelings from the drama, or perhaps it’s because it was so frustrating that it sticks in my memory.

I consistently felt disappointed by the directing.

The cast of “SSombody”

김영광출연 Kim Young-kwang as Seong Yuno

강해림출연 Kang Hae lim as Kim Seom

김용지출연 Kim Yong-ji as Mok Won

김수연출연 Kim Soo-yeon as Ki-eun

I had the feeling of seeing the actor Kim young-kwang for the first time, other than him, in the cast. Since I’m not very keen on watching drams, it’s possible that they might have appeared in other dramas or movies that I simply don’t remember, Kim Youg-ji caught my attention consistently, and I wonder if we see the, in other places soon.

Summary of k- drama “Ssombody”

Kim Seom, an IT genius with Asperger’s syndrome, creates an anonymous dating app called “Ssombody.” Through the app, Kim Seom meets Oh Yoon. Among his criminal activities facilitated by the app, Oh Yoon encounter Kim Seom’s police officer friend Ki-eun. After her encounter with Oh Yoon, Ki-eun is left hurt and seeks revenge, aided by her friend, shaman Mok Won. Ki-eun attempts to capture Oh Yoon while Kim Seom tries to shield him. As events unfold, the story heads towards a crisis.

My Subjective Overall Review of k-drama ‘Ssombody’

I can’t quite grasp what the director intended or wanted to convey. In short, if I were to summarize it, it felt like a mishmash.

It’s as if they wanted to include a special protagonist with a disability, a police officer friend who also acquires a disability, the friend’s shaman acquaintance, a theme of the shaman friend being in love with someone of the same gender, the CEO of the company where the protagonist works being mentally unstable, showcasing the protagonist as as IT genius but also introducing a hacker surpassing that genius, incorporating Korean shamanism, and discussing provocative crimes. It’s unclear what kind of narrative they were aiming for.

  • I wonder if they aimed to portray stories about actual crimes facilitated by anonymous apps, or if they perhaps incorporated events that happen in real life.

They seemed to want to use characters with disabilities in a special way, but the development was uncertain on how to truly highlight these characters.

And I’m really curious about why the friend who was a police officer was portrayed as so stubborn. I’m intrigued about what they intended to show through that portrayal.

The first time, I can understand it, but the second time, I questioned the necessity of it. Why face it alone? And why did our boss just let the friend go that way, closing the door and taking the complicated route, when he could have guided them on the right path?

The most frustrating scene while watching “Ssomebody” and the scene where I felt sorry for the production

And the intriguing friend who emerged as a shaman, when threatened by the murderer, shouldn’t the logical step be to approach the police? I couldn’t understand why they all seem to place their trust in their own efforts, even with the option of involving the Korean police.

The lack of believability surrounding the protagonist becoming a psychopathic killer due to committing murders a year ago was quite glaring. It’s hard to believe that an average person would casually commit two murders and them suddenly become a murderer.

To summarize

SSombody is a puzzling drama with an array of themes that fail to coalesce into a cohesive narrative. Characters with disabilities, police investigations, shamanism, and psychopathy are thrown together, leaving viewers perplexed. Despite strong performances and unique direction, the story’s lack of coherence and rushed execution lead to frustration. The drama’s intent remains uncertain, but its attempt to amalgamate disparate themes could be seen as both its strength and weakness.
